Topic: Succession Planning – Passing the Farm to the Next Generation
Farmers face special challenges in planning for the transfer of the farming operation to the next generation. In this workshop, Margaret Heiser Fulton and Margaret R. Smith, CPA, will help you look at issues such as continuation of the farm operation after the death of the first spouse, and fair treatment of both on-farm children and off-farm children after the death of both parents. We will discuss changes in the estate tax law, the use of trusts to avoid probate and the advantages of conservation easements. Succession planning is similar to farming. It is a process, not an event, and in order to get the desired results it should begin long before the need arises.
